All BMW's have an associated model, or code name. So for example in the 3 Series there is an E30, E36, E46 etc.

Data CodesThe BMW cars are often referred to using their E numbers amongst owners and enthusiasts. This can get very confusing at times, considering there are so many different beemers. As you can see, not all the cars have a pattern in which their numbers are applied. As the E numbers have begun to run out, you can now see BMW have applied F numbers to their newer cars like the new 6 Series, and X3 and X5's too. What the F stands for we are unsure, but, E stands for Entwicklung, German meaning development. The numbers stand for something which we also are unsure. Perhaps the number of attempts or drafts at design level? Or perhaps the people surveyed whilst the car was going through research phase? Maybe somebody could email in and let us know..
