The BMW 1 Series was first offered to the market in 2004 as a five-door hatchback and is the only rear-wheel drive in its class. It replaced the BMW 3 Series Compact range and is currently the smallest and most 'affordable' vehicle in the BMW range. During its first full year on the market in 2005 it sold 149,493, becoming one of BMW's most successful products.

BMW 5 Series

The BMW 5 Series got its name by being the fifth of the "new series" cars after the V-8 and Isetta era. It was intended to replace the smaller New Class saloons, leaving the coupes as the company's low-end model. On January 29, 2008, the 5 millionth 5 series, a 530d saloon in Carbon Black Metallic, was manufactured.

BMW 6 Series

BMW 6 Series refers to two generations of car from BMW. The first was the E24 launched in 1976. The second was the all new E63 / E64 which was released in 2003, filling the hole in the lineup left since the end of the 8-Series' production. In 2005, the M6 version of the new 6 Series was introduced with a whopping 500 BHP, 0 - 60 in 4.6 seconds!

BMW 7 Series

There have been four generations of the 7 Series: BMW E23 (1977–1986), BMW E32 (1987–1994), BMW E38 (1995–2001), BMW E65 / E66 (2002–present). The BMW 7 series will undergo its next redesign and facelift in 2008 with the new model going on sale in early 2009. This will be the only luxury vehicle in the world to offer petrol, diesel, hybrid and now a hydrogen powertrain. Prototypes are reportedly equipped with new, twin-turbo V8 engines producing 500 BHP.

BMW 8 Series

The BMW 8 Series (E31) is a V8 or V12 - engined 2door coupe built from 1989 to 1999 with an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph, although with the limiters removed top speed was estimated at 186 mph. Worldwide production ceased May 12, 1999, with 30,621 built. BMW is rumored to have plans to revive the 8 Series name for a potential "four-door coupe," much like the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class.

BMW Z Series

The BMW Z1 is a two-seat roadster developed by BMW Forschung und Technik GmbH and produced from March 1989 to June 1991. The Z1 featured unusual doors which, instead of opening outward or upward, dropped down into the door sills. Only 8,000 examples of the Z1 were produced. The Z in Z1 originally stood for Zukunft (German for future) and would later be used on other cars in the line: the Z3, Z4, and Z8).

The Z3 was introduced as a 1996 model year vehicle, shortly after being featured in the James Bond movie, GoldenEye. There were a few variants of the car before its production run ended in 2002, including a coupé version for 1999. It was manufactured and assembled in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The Z3 was replaced by the BMW Z4 introduced in late 2002 at the Paris Auto Show.

The most powerful car of the Z4 line-up is the Z4 M. It features a naturally aspirated, in-line six cylinder engine, used in the third generation of the BMW M3, producing 338 bhp at 7,900 rpm and 365 N·m (269 lb·ft) of torque at 4,900 rpm. 0-100 km/h takes 5.0 seconds, and the top speed is limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). Replacing the Z3, first-generation production started in 2002 at BMW's Spartanburg, South Carolina plant, with both roadster and coupe forms produced.

The $128,000 BMW Z8 had an all aluminum chassis and body and used a 4.9 L (4941 cc) 32 valve V8, that developed 400 bhp. This engine was built by the BMW Motorsport subsidiary and was shared with the E39 M5. The factory claimed a 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62.5 mph) time of 4.7 seconds
